Driver Breaks FAQ

Below are the answers to the Frequently Asked Questions about Driver Breaks.

If you'd like to learn more about what the driver breaks are and how to set them up, follow the link to the article below:

Driver Breaks

Can the breaks move around within the duty?

While Static Driver Breaks are not automatically moved around the duty, Dynamic Driver breaks start time can be adjusted by GOLD to ensure that it’s in the most optimal place in the duty that satisfies the “Max driving time” constraint. E.g:

  • If the Max driving time without a break is 5 hours and the duty is 8 hours long

  • The duty starts at 12pm and ends at 8pm

  • The break can start anywhere between 2:30pm and 5pm. Even if the duty is very busy between 12pm and 6pm, there will still be a break somewhere between 2:30pm and 5pm.

Note that the break cannot be moved if it is the next slot in the manifest.

Can I configure the minimum length of a duty that needs a break?

Not directly. This is inferred from the ‘Max driving time without a break’ setting. If the Max driving time without a break is 5 hours, any duties under 5 hours will get no break.

Can there be multiple breaks in the duty?

Yes, for example if the max driving time without a break is 3 hours and the duty is 8 hours long, there will be two breaks.

Can there be two breaks back-to-back?

Yes, but only in rare scenarios. For example, if the:

  • The break length is 30 minutes

  • The max driving time without a break is 5 hours

  • The duty is 11 hours long

  • Then it’s possible for a 30 min break to occur 5 hours into the shift and a second 30-minute break to occur 5 hours 30 mins into the shift.

Can breaks be started early?

No. The break will start at the scheduled time. There is no way for admins or drivers to manually start a break early.

Can breaks be ended early?

No. The break will end at the scheduled time. There is no way for administrators or drivers to manually end a break early.

Can breaks be cancelled?

Yes. Upcoming and in-progress breaks can be cancelled by admin users.

Can the length of the break be changed by GOLD if the duty is busy?

No. The break will always be the length specified in the fleet settings.

Can the trips scheduled after the break be optimized to different duties by GOLD?

Yes. We don’t lock any pickups that are scheduled after the break to duty. This is to account for drivers that drive away from their next pickup during their break. If this happens, it’s possible another driver may be better positioned to fulfill the trip.

What happens when I upgrade from Static Driver Breaks to Dynamic Driver Breaks?

Any new duties that are created will have Dynamic Driver breaks. Any duties created before the upgrade will have static driver breaks.
